Saturday 7th July 2007 - Heading Towards Siem Reap

(Daniel) After a surprisingly good nights sleep, I drove the Wolf back to the mechanics that we met yesterday, we jacked up the other side of the trailer, and worked for an hour to remove and refit the parts with washers that one of the men made to order.

Day two on the roads finishing repairs

After an hour the work was finished, and we set out again towards Siem Reap.  The road was tougher than yesterday, but occasionally the potholes thinned out and I was able to get a burst of speed.  All the way we saw people staring in wonder at the vehicle, even though it was covered in mud!  The engine purred on as we drove another three hours to Siem Reap arriving at around lunchtime.

The change I saw was amazing, by far the most development I have seen in an area.  Where the town had one hotel before, it now has over one hundred.  Most of these huge international chains, or specialist Spa resorts.  I couldn’t believe that this was the same town.  Apart from the streets and the market, the place had exploded with growth.  Still in need of a lonely planet I circled the city several times before finding the main tourist centre.  I had wanted to stay in a traditional wooden house as I had last time.  But there were none of these left, they had all been knocked down and replaced with hotels or modern Thai style guesthouses.

Siem Reap

It took me an hour and a half to finally find a guesthouse, the traffic had started to get to me by then, so Nii and I walked into the town for some dinner.  Afterwards we stayed around the area as the nightlife began.  It was similar to Thailand, amazing really, as only a few years ago people were afraid to go out at night here.

After a few drinks we decided to head back and get to bed, tomorrow we will go to Ankor Wat, and spend the day exploring what is in my opinion the greatest wonder of the world.
