(Daniel) In an effort to try and get the diary up to date, I got up this morning and started typing. I didn’t stop until Lunchtime, when Nii and I walked to a café close to the hotel. We ate lunch there, and returned to the Hotel.
I stayed in until Dinner time, organising photos and typing up more diary updates. Then went out for dinner and to sample a little of Siem Reap’s nightlife. The place has changed considerably since I was last here, and now sports quite a busy night scene, not that I think it suits the place. From the respectful and individual people that occupied the town on my visit six years ago. A new breed of Cambodian has emerged, smiling to your face, and offering you a tuc tuc ride. I can’t help but feel that a big chunk of the culture here has already disappeared below the surface of new hotels and spa resorts.
All in all a pretty quiet day, but disappointing too, as for all the time I spent writing my diary I am still months behind. My plan is to write the diary for the present day, at the same time as catching up on the backlog. I hope that this will keep people interested, as I got a few emails prior to this catch up plan that sounded very disappointed in my efforts with the blog. I have to say, that after six months on the road, putting time aside to write the updates is very hard. Each day takes around an hour, and there are always issues which take priority for me. But from an outside perspective I can understand peoples thoughts.
I went to bed tonight thinking of the huge task ahead, and the upcoming shipping leg to America. I didn’t sleep until very late! When I did eventually get off to sleep I woke up again about an hour later. I had been bitten in at least 12 places by mosquitoes, I checked the screens on the windows, but they were closed. I lay awake and exterminated as many as possible before going to sleep again.
