(Daniel) The next few days were spent hanging around with the Super Lavados boys! They were quite the jokers, and easy to spend time with, although I still wonder what all the guns were about! A few times I borrowed the weapons to have a look. I guess that we have a kind of dread fascination with the weapons, as we never get to see them in England!
Most of the guys had Glocks, they told me that these were reliable and cheap. Apparently this was the best weapon to go in water or mud, and still fire.
I arranged to get the Cooper tyres rotated, giving me new tread for any upcoming adventures in the jungle, and for my ball joints to be fitted. The rear one would be a specialist job for a machine shop. But all that was available here in Coban.
The town itself was a beautiful place, I recommend it to any tourists passing through Guatemala. Colonial architecture, mixed with tribal markets and people, an eclectic and pleasant cocktail. The boys were interested in everything offroad, especially the Expedition, again and again I found myself showing my photos to groups of gun toting cowboys.
On the second night, we all went for steak at a small restaurant in town. This was to be my new stomach lining, but I was unable to finish the amazing meal, steak drizzled with melted cheese and potatoes, this was mans food alright!
The next day we picked up a new sponsor, one free pizza in exchange for some photos of the trucks outside the shop. There was talk of a TV and Radio interview.
I also got a chance to repair the rooftent, as the chequer plate protection that I had glued on in England had been ripped off in Tikal, I cut more plates especially for the coming jungle trips, further protecting the delicate fibreglass from branches.
During one of the nights at the hotel, I had gone to bed early, ready for an offroading day in the morning. I was woken by terrible screaming from the room next door. I got up to investigate, and found three American girls in their night shirts jumping around in the corridor. They couldn’t speak from fear, I walked into the room to find a tarantula hiding in the corner. The poor thing was scared stiff. I managed to pick him up, and take him outside. The girls, not satisfied with this, left the hotel at 1am to find another spider-free place to stay!
