Wednesday 4th April 2007 - Batu Rackit, Malaysia

(Daniel) My phone woke me up today, I couldn’t see the film crew outside, which was a good thing.  When I answered the call the person on the other end introduced himself as Kumin, Aleyna’s friend, and told me that he would going to the 10th anniversary at Cameron Highlands, and that we could go together in convoy.  I was glad to hear a friendly voice, and we made arrangements to meet in a couple of days.  The call prompted me to start organising and packing the Wolf, which I had slowly been unloading into the house over the past few days.  I worked at this, and typed some diary stuff until after midday.  Then I headed into town to eat some food. I found a nice Chinese place, and ate noodle soup there before heading back to the house.

When I returned the Casting director Andrew was waiting for me.  He wanted to use the Wolf for one of his scenes, but then on closer inspection realised that it would not be suitable.  I knew that he would say this, but when he asked me if I knew anyone that had a vehicle in the area I thought of Kumin.  I got in touch with Aleyna, who called Kumin, but he was not interested.  I told Andrew, who drove off in a hurry, presumably to find some other person with a 4x4. Aleyna called me back then, and told me that two other expeditions had entered Malaysia, and that they were hoping to attend the anniversary, but that one was having trouble with the shipping agents, and getting their vehicle form Port Klang. I told her that I had made some good friends down there, and that if he called me, I would speak to Daren at the docks, and see if we could speed things up.

A few minutes later my phone rang It was David, he and his wife are undertaking a three year expedition, and had just traveled the route which I had taken through Iran and Pakistan.  He explained that he had already appointed an agent who he had paid 2800RM for handling fees, the agent was now telling him that it would be another 5-0 days to get the vehicle.  I told him that I had paid more like 1200 all in, and that when I had gone to the docks in person, I had got the container in front of me in one hour. He was amazed, and told me that he would try and cancel the shipping agent.  I called Daren in the meantime, and he said that he would be glad to help.  When David came back to me I brought him up to speed, and gave him Daren’s number.  I wished him luck, and told him that I looked forward to meeting him at the Anniversary in a few days.

After this I went back to the beach for dinner, stopping at a different place this time.  I noticed that the waitress looked familiar, and then realised that it was the same girl from the other restaurant yesterday.  She was wearing the veil now but I could recognise her face.  I tried to talk to her, but she did the “No speaking” thing again.  She did smile at me many times though, and when I left I felt that same way as yesterday.  I went home then, and went to bed after typing up some more diary.
